Attention Span, OK Hotel, 1991
Presented by the OK Girls in the exhibit COUNTER/positions
Attention Span was installed in two rooms across the corridor from each other in the OK Hotel, a historic flophouse hotel on the Seattle waterfront. It contrasted the helplessness of adults attending a sick child to that of the disabled or dying adult. Graphite rubbings on the walls signify waiting behavior: the silent, waiting attention in Room 1 is represented by rubbings at the parents' eye level. In Room 2 the occupant of the bed would be looking upward in silent waiting, hence the graphite rubbings of switchplates and other details at ceiling height.
