The wheelchairs that comprise RE-Vamp are hybrids. Discarded by their previous owners, they have been retrofitted with materials chosen primarily for their aesthetic appeal. Given that we require both utility and aesthetic pleasure in our daily lives, this project explores the perceived value of those two qualities in medical machinery.
Contrasted to other items there, a highly aestheticized wheelchair in a medical equipment showroom accentuates the value placed on utility. A relatively utilitarian sculpture here in an art context demonstrates the inverse.
